Today, research suggests that up to 60 per cent of all web searches are now carried out on smartphones or tablets, which has had a huge impact on web design.
Before technology went mobile, web designers tended to use ‘tables’ to set out website content, as this was a helpful way of creating good-looking sites that displayed beautifully on monitors. Web page layouts were designed to display in landscape mode, as monitor screens were all a similar shape even if they weren’t exactly the same size.
Then smartphones came into being, steadily gaining in popularity since the summer of 2007 when the first iPhone was launched. With its new small touchscreens, it instantly became a hit with the public, who could now access information on the go without having to wait for their bulky desktop computers to boot up. The Android phone was developed as the iPhone’s competitor and the technology quickly went mainstream.
Web developers set out to tackle the problem, initially settling on creating two separate websites - one for desktops and one for smaller mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
Although this worked very well, the problem was that business owners now had to pay for two completely separate websites, both of which needed to be created and updated regularly. Web developers came up with a new solution to the problem and created a new, mobile friendly web design that enabled people to access their favourite websites whether they were viewing them on a desktop monitor or a much smaller smartphone screen.
Known as responsive website design, this new method of creating websites got rid of the traditional tables and introduced a grid system to replace it. By placing content and images within the grids, a website could now adjust automatically to fit the screen size used to display it.
Google takes a dim view of sites that don’t take their mobile visitors into account; therefore, failing to adopt a mobile responsive website design can severely impact your position in the search engine results pages, leading to a significant loss of visitors even if they are accessing search through their desktop computers.
No doubt you will have come across non-responsive websites on your smartphone, so you will understand the sense of frustration on being presented with a huge amount of information crammed into a screen that is too small to display it in such a way as to render it readable. No doubt you have quickly clicked, tapped or swiped your way back to your search results to find a different company that has had the foresight to create a mobile friendly web design.
